FM licence granted for FromeFM

It gives us great pleasure to announce that OfCom’s licensing committee have decided to award a full 5 year FM broadcasting licence to FromeFM. The formal announcement from OfCom was issued at 11.00am on Weds 23^rd 2011.

We’d like to thank everyone who has played a part in making this happen – presenters, techies, supporters, sponsors, funders, contributors, current and ex members, councillors, colleagues in the creative industries of Frome and members of the general public who, for some strange reason, seem to quite like what we do and carry on listening.

FM will enable us to boldly go where no local radio station has gone before. Neither the BBC nor MoreFM (it’s almost an anagram of FromeFM – coincidence or conspiracy?) delivers local current affairs to people in Whatcombe Road, or produces drama penned by writers in Great Elm or plays music composed in Alexandra Road.

Our ‘key commitments’ from the application will be published on the FFM website once we’ve agreed the final wording with OfCom. The commitments will be the yardstick by which our FM service will be judged. They will tell you what the FM service will sound like and how we intend to develop our programmes.

To make more shows and better shows, we’re going to need more people but … If we broadcast, then they will come.

The answers to your next 2 questions are as yet unknown - OfCom have allocated a frequency to us, but they just haven’t told us what it is yet. And the launch date for the new service is dependent upon OfCom engineering, planning permission for the transmission site and going through a detailed pre-launch plan. However, Armstrong, Aldrin and the other one are now in the Command Module and the countdown is about to start. I think we’re looking at Spring 2012 for blast-off.

So, brilliant news – and once again congratulations and thanks to everyone for making this happen.

Henry's a sucker for FromeFM

FromeFM were delighted to win a ‘Henry’ donated by Numatic Ltd in a recent competition run by Somerset Community Foundation, an organisation that administers grants and funding in the local area.

The competition asked for a slogan to describe how Henry could help your group. Phil’s witty slogan described how Henry was a sucker for FromeFM and would help us clean up the media!

FromeFM has seen a 93% increase in ‘on demand’ listening to its shows in the first 6 months of 2011 with over 11,000 FromeFM shows having been downloaded or replayed from the website.

“This is great news for our 80 plus volunteers, who have put so much work into producing such a diverse range of programmes,”said Station Manager Phil Moakes. “It’s also good news for our sponsors, because more people will be seeing their adverts. At a time when all businesses are feeling the pinch it’s good to know that our services are reaching more people than ever before. Since FromeFM is a free service, we can only develop it further through building on our sponsors and through creating new services that people buy. ”

FromeFM have recently made an application to Somerset County Council’s Creative Industries Development Fund to help kickstart an audiobook service.

“The purpose of our bid is to secure funding to make real products. We have put in a bid for £8000 from which we hope to generate £20,000 and more going forward. This will put money and work into the hands of the writers, composers and creative professionals in Frome, as well as providing a revenue stream for FromeFM.”

FromeFM have 3 audiobook projects in the pipeline for launch before Christmas. The first will be a dramatization of the children’s adventure novel ‘Doors Of Time’ written by local author Andrew Saunders. Two more projects will be announced in August.

“One of them will be a collaboration between FromeFM and The Merlin Theatre which we hope will make a contribution to their fighting fund to keep the theatre running.”

Fingers crossed for FromeFM

Broadcasters at FromeFM are holding their breath and crossing their fingers and toes while they wait to hear whether Ofcom will grant an FM radio licence for Frome. The chance to apply for an FM licence only comes round every 5 years, so as soon as Ofcom announced an offering of licences in the South West, FromeFM were quick to respond.

“We have to demonstrate the benefits for Frome that having our own FM radio can give” said FromeFM Station manager Phil Moakes. “Lots of local groups and businesses have sent us messages of support and we would like to say a big thank you to them and to everyone who has filled in our petition. We have included extracts from many of these messages in our application.”

Local MP David Heath who regularly appears on FromeFM in the politics show ‘Constituency Matters’ was keen to voice the benefits of an FM licence for reaching more people in the community.

‘Dr Who’ and ‘Life on Mars’ writer Matthew Graham, who lives locally, is also enthusiastic to support the FromeFM application. “Community radio provides a great outlet for new writers.”

The FM application went in earlier this week, well in time for the 21^st July deadline. It is likely that we won’t hear until August/September whether we have been successful. Keep your fingers crossed!

In the meantime we are busy gearing up for coverage of the Frome festival on the internet on http://www.fromefm.co.uk/ and we have an exciting project underway to create an audio book with a local author. Watch this space.

Ralph Says - "You Need To Know"

Ralph Hemus, FromeFM presenter and National Autistic Society campaigner, has produced a one-off short documentary highlighting the 'You Need To Know' campaign. The documentary includes an interview with NAS campaigns manager Tom Madders along with an audio version of the 'You Need To Know' film, made by the NAS Young Campaigners Group. Ralph says " the film highlights mental health issues experienced by some people who suffer from autism and talks about what needs to be done to help them. The young campaigners group consists of 7 or 8 young people, including myself, who got together through the NAS to work on this issue. We produced a film, that has been shown to MPs from all over the country and even had a 'premiere' launch at The Empire Cinema in Leicester Square." The You Need To Know documentary is scheduled for broadcast on FromefM on Sunday 29th May at midday.

OfCom have announced this week that South West community broadcasters can now apply for a 5 year FM licence. The window for applications is open until July 21st 2011 and we hope to get our bid in quickly by mid May.

When Leslie Glenn Damhus' painting Madonna and Chimp was shown during the Open Art Exhibition in Spring 2010, it prompted a flurry of letters in the local papers regarding the appropriation of Christian imagery. In January this year, Black Swan Arts hosted a debate around this issue. The speakers were: Salil Tripathi, writer and policy director at the Institute for Human Rights and Business, whose most recently book is about censorship and artist Rob Irving who is undertaking doctoral research into performative action in the shaping of sacred settings.

On Friday January 28th at 12:00 Farleigh college student Ralph presents a LIVE show “Ralph’s finest hour”. On his first show Ralph talked about his experiences speaking at the House of Commons and at the Conservative Party Conference about Aspergers. Music included Cheryl Cole and West Life. In his new show Ralph will play music and talk about his speech at the National Autistic Society event in Bristol.

On Saturday 29^th January at 7pm ‘Boo! Teak’ hosted by Andy Morten promises lost sounds from pop’s golden era, a new and bespoke mix of far-out 60s & 70s sounds and at 8pm 'Blues Train’ with Dave Watkins is a new monthly round up of the best blues music we can find!

On Sunday 30^th Jan at 12:00, ‘Seeing Things’ is a new series about the visual arts in Frome, presented by David Chandler one of Frome's most well known and established artists. So far David has met up with the Frome Arts Society, visited the ‘Image Wall’ exhibition at the Black Swan and interviewed local artists Tristan Stevens, Ellen Tovey and Kitty Hillier.

Also on Sunday 30^th Jan at 4pm playing post-rock, lo-fi, acoustics and electronica, Jon Gordon's new show provides a showcase for bands whose music may not have been heard either nationally or indeed actually in the UK, so prepare for an entirely new listening experience.

Other new shows to listen out for are ‘Domenic’, ‘Osmosis’, and ‘A perfect world’ as well as lots of your old favourites.

FromeFM presenter featured in Frome Life magazine

FromeFM presenter and local composer Helen Ottaway is featured in the December issue of Frome Life magazine.

Helen presents the show 'Take me to the River' which features music from all styles and periods, linked by the theme of the river and its water, flowing from source to sea.
As a composer, Helen has worked with John Cage and appeared in Peter Greenaway's film about him for Channel 4. As pianist and keyboard player she was a founder member of the new music group Regular Music with whom she has toured and recorded extensively in the UK and abroad.

Helen's many commissions include BBC2 (title and incidental music for the documentary 'The River', 1999); Bath Film Festival (Rain / String Quartet No. 2 to accompany the silent film 'Regen', 2003) and Frome Festival (harpsichord works for 2005 and 2006). In March 2007 she led a major educational project in Frome (It's a String Thing!) working with 150 local young string players. Helen was also commissioned to write a piece for 'Home in Frome' at the 2010 Frome festival.

Sport Pie is usually a monthly round up of what's happening on the local sports front - news, reports, scores, stories ...but this months special replays previous interviews with local sports personalities.

From February 2011, we will have a monthly slot where we invite a couple of people to sit in and give their verdicts on the latest sporting talking points in our SPORTS COURT - so if anyone would like to be part of this, please get in touch. You just need to be able to sit there and give your opinions about issues both local and worldwide!

FromeFM rock show 'Come On Let's Rock' moves to a new time, with an extra presenter and a longer slot. On Sat 15th Jan, Come On Let's Rock regular Mark Besley will be joined by Rob Way for a 90 minute show, featuring the best that rock has to offer. The new show starts at 10.30pm and rocks through till midnight.

From the old greats such as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Robert Johnson, through to the likes of Steve Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy and George Thorogood, to more recent heroes including Joanne Shaw Taylor, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Oli Brown. We will also bring you as much new talent as we can and aim to feature the best of the local talent as well.
